| First Official Windows Binaries for ASSS | - [Mine GO BOOM] | September 7, 2004 | |
| Grelminar finally did what he wanted to do a long, long time ago: be able to build his own binaries for Windows. I personally have not tested these, but should within a week or so when I get the time. If someone whom is good with documentation would like to test these out, and write up a simple How To for beginners, I'd be happy to post them here. Please post all problems and questions pertaining to ASSS in the ASSS Questions forum. If you find that ASSS crashes at specific times, or contains other functional problems, post them in the ASSS Bugs forum. If you'd like to request a certain feature, post them at the Server Suggestions forum. Visit the Official ASSS Website for more detailed information. - Windows Version 1.3.1
- Linux Version 1.3.1

| SSCX will be having some downtime in the very near future, where it maybe down for a little bit at random times over the next week. It may even involved changing of IPs. Just a message from Yarekim. |
|
| Yeah, just posting about the lack of news. One good thing though, in the past couple of weeks, the Subspace Council is communicating again. Getting little done, but talking again. Thats a plus. Even Priit sent a few emails. |

MGB is a jackass, I don't care. With friends like you people, who need enemies.

| I've updated the Debuildlevel program inside of the LVZToolKit.zip. The only change was that I've changed 'char' to 'unsigned char' inside of the source. What does this mean? Well, if you have over 127 different images, when you ran the debuildlevel on this lvz file, it would create the output with negative image numbers. So if you happen to create lvzs with over 127 images, you may want to upgrade. Otherwise, nothing else changed. |

Hmm yeah, so, if anyone will be looking for me I'll be at halo's forums or whatever. If I'll play the game at all, I'll either be at chaos or halo. | SubSpace news! | - [G-Man] | April 10, 2004 | |
| Miney cried that I should post news about SS/Server. So, there you have it: ... ... Apparently, if you google images for SubSpace, the first thing you come about is from a Russian site display the help screen with a like to ss.vie.com. ... Oh, and www.subspace.cc has NOTHING to do with SS. There's also a domain called www.subspacegraphics.com but it too has NOTHING to do with SS. ... ... That was it! Join us again next year. *F3-rocket* Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! I think I'll start stealing news from SubSpace Times site...

| Apperantly, uncle sam is just the tip of the iceberg. | - [G-Man] | April 8, 2004 | |
Naturally, you expect the bad-good guys and otherwise wolves in sheep clothing or what not to misbehave. However, when those who you would ussually do not suspect, and cry out to be such nice guys end up developing some kind of an obscure and devious domination plan (remember now, information is power, and these guys made a billion-dollar-rolling company out of that hypothesis as well as collecting enough information to make Microsoft shiver and try to buy them out) things start to seem threatening and worrying. We (I) are talking about the new "great deal - by first look" of google, the 100MBs free of charge email account. To those of you who have signed in with it, or planning to, I would suggest that you do not, ever, never, corrospond with anyone on it without using PGP, at the least not untill this issue is resolved and we, the public will get some more information about the giant information hogger's plans. As for more details about this new email plan of google known as g-mail, I'll adress you to an article over at the register. The possibilities are truely creepy, to say in an understatement. |
| Uncle Sam wants your Privates!!! And then some... | - [G-Man] | April 8, 2004 | |
| It's a long page reading, so I am not going to post it, rather link it instead. It does matter how this turns out, but eitherway, it won't end good, in the very least for the long run. In an essence, this was the opening shot, and the FBI has just declared war. Many enemies were formed to the US gov. today, and may of these foes might form alliances in the future. Time will tell... |

Definately a hoax. Meant to be april fool's day (but silly people behind it didn't realise it's not april's fools yet outside of the eastren edge block). Eitherway, very amatuerishly done, and even a script kiddie could realise it up after a couple of simple checks. To the general player public: Next time, please adress a more realiable source of information for some actual facts (you can count on me or MGB for instance), before you let yourself wrongly be decieved by the such as this (april fool's or not). |
| Robin Williams fiction | - [Gravitron] | March 30, 2004 | |
This has been circulating about for the past week, kind of funny. People claim that it's impossible that Robin wrote it since he's a declared liberal. IMHO, he might have wrote it AS A JOKE. IE, the sort of "ok, lets get tired of trying to maintain democracy, lets go your way, lets be lamers" and here's the result of how he invisions the USA to handle after of: _______________________________________ I see a lot of people yelling for peace but I have not heard of one plan for peace. " Books, not Bombs" won't work. The head mullahs won't let anyone read them. If they do, they poke their eyes out. Here's the plan: 1) The US will apologize to the world for our "interference" in their affairs, past & present. You know, Hitler, Mussolini and the rest of them 'good old boys'. We will never "interfere" again. 2) We will withdraw our troops from all over the world, starting with Germany, South Korea and the Philippines. They don't want us there. We would station troops at our borders. No more sneaking through holes in the fence. 3) All illegal aliens have 90 days to get their affairs together and leave. We'll give them a free trip home. After 90 days the remainder will be gathered up and deported immediately, regardless of who or where they are. France would welcome them. 4) All future visitors will be thoroughly checked and limited to 90 days unless given a special permit. No one from a terrorist nation would be allowed in. If you don't like it there, change it yourself, don't hide here. Asylum would not ever be available to anyone. We don't need any more cab drivers. 5) No "students" over age 21. The older ones are the bombers. If they don't attend classes, they get a "D" and it's back home baby. 6) The US will make a strong effort to become self sufficient energy wise. This will include developing non polluting sources of energy but will require a temporary drilling of oil in the Alaskan wilderness. The caribou will have to cope for a while. 7) Offer Saudi Arabia and other oil producing countries $10 a barrel for their oil. If they don't like it, we go someplace else. 8) If there is a famine or other natural catastrophe in the world, we will not "interfere". They can pray to Allah or whomever, for seeds, rain, cement or whatever they need. Besides' most of what we give them is stolen or given to the army. The people who need it most get very little, if any anyway. 9) Ship the UN Headquarters to an island some place. We don't need the spies and fair weather friends here. Besides, it would make a good homeless shelter or lockup for illegal aliens. 9b) Use the buildings as replacement for the twin towers. 10) All Americans must go to charm and beauty school. That way, no one can call us "Ugly Americans" any longer. Now, ain't that a winner of a plan. "The Statue of Liberty is no longer saying'Give me your poor, your tired, your huddled masses.' She's got a baseball bat and she's yelling, 'You want a piece of me?'" - Robin Williams. ___________________________ In other non-important and unrelated news: Since I'm pretty useless, old fashioned and am only used as a tease coushin or whatever in MGB's forums, which I got quite tired of, I've decided to ban myself from them. Funniest thing, my access code is comprised of a sentence which I have long gone now ceased to fullful. |

| AIM users beware! | - [Gravitron] | February 17, 2004 | |
| KTTD Posted: Feb 13 2004, 08:00 AM Yes indeed, AOL's snappy new "Instant Messenger" does contain WildTangent - their "partnership" in popup advertising is part of their new "buddy games" "feature." WildTangent is a "borderline" trojan - actually defined as "adware" and where we cut the mustard is a complicated legal thing that Nancy can explain better than I can. But legally, most of the WildTangent stuff is not "officially" a trojan except for one part. The reasoning is this - WildTangent DOES place a working uninstaller on the control panel. If you go there to the "Add/Remove software" item and remove the "WildTangent" stuff, almost ALL of it does go away. The "WCMDMGRL.EXE" item will remain running and will not come out. This ONE piece is the actual "trojan" ... the other item detected by a few others is the "updater" for it. A fresh new one was made for AOL exclusively so THEY could provide advertising. Also, another factor is that when people go to install anything containing "WildTangent" there ***IS*** a VERY clearly stated warning of what WildTangent is and what it does from a privacy standpoint in the license agreement prior to installation. Folks don't read it though. Unlike the "WCMDMGRL.EXE" item though, the "WCMDMGR" portion is controlled directly by AOL-IM itself and that's why the AV didn't get it at the same time - it wasn't running or TRYING to run until the firewall nabbed it first and locked access in my best estimation of what happened. As to the registry entries, those would belong to the entire SET of WildTangent files and the "game pieces" belonging to it. What you'll want to do (of course, ditch that AIM first) is go to your Program files folder and have a look at all the "WildTangent" subfolder. There'll also be more in the \(windows)\WT folder ... there's a lot of stuff in there. Running the "Add/Remove" from the control panel however for "WildTangent" WILL remove all this. AOL however has decided to make SURE that if you remove it, they can put it back, thus the other bit of the "surprise" ... |

I would also like to remind people that, the news suggestion box, as well as the news themselves consequently, is actually not for you to use as a mean to convey people personall messages, advertise your zone or ask questions. For that you may use the forums, it's the reason for their existance. If I find the time to visit your zone, and I'll like it, I might plug it, but that is all upto me. Kisses and flowers. Jacked from SubSpaceHQ. Apperantly, the developers of CLE have throwen the towel for the time being, so you can now grab the source of it and have a shot at it yourself. On an unrelated note, I've checked the "suggestions" box (if you notice right above the news, there's a suggest news linky-button), and it seems that some of you confuse the concept of news with that of zone propoganda or our help section of the message boards. Please refrain from making that mistake. |

| This is from slashdot: Posted by timothy on Saturday October 04, @02:49PM from the but-guys-what's-the-big-deal dept. 00420 writes "VeriSign, the administrator of the .com and .net domains, made plans to shut down its new Site Finder service Friday, after the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers ordered the company to undo controversial changes. Of course they're not taking it down because it affected the internet, they're just doing it to keep good relations with the technical community. (Seems a little late for that doesn't it?)" The shutdown is not complete yet, though: VeriSign hasn't changed their wildcard DNS entry (64.94.110.11). |

| SubSpace 2?... (Don't get too excited) | - [Gravitron] | July 31, 2003 | |
Well, I, personally, don't really know what all the big commotion is about. SilverPlatter was a developer of Peer2Peer technology, supposedly one which will save costs of operating central servers for MPOGs by using new and secure Peer2Peer technology. They were to display ( http://www.silverplattersoftware.com/news.htm ) a working MPOG on this tech at a convention, but I never saw any news anywhere on it (even on gamespy, they faded after a single news). Anyway, BDE grouped with this company (Horizon = SilverPlatter, Horizon's DEx = Alloy(tm) P2Ptech) to make this Peer2Peer technology for their new project - www.altnet.com. A big Peer2Peer network for sharing information, vending songs for artists and hosting MPOGs. SubSpace was supposed to be their prime flag ship product in the last section, to prove that this tech really works. So, even that silverplatter has bitten the bullet, I doubt that BDE (the owners of BDE own the SS rights under a cash-company called Ozaq2) are going to stop there just because of that. What they'll do with SS from there...well, this is a whole another unknown issue and your guess is as good as mine. But getting all excited over Horizon/SP filing chapter 11, is hardly justified. Because they just created the networking technology, if you will, part of "SS2", they were not developing the actual game. And thus, I do not see a reason for them to make a big impact, as I'm sure BDE will rush to grab the tech, develop it further to completion, and the game itself is probably still being in continued development by whichever section of BDE which was handling it so far. |

| Hopefully last 0.38 lvztoolkit.zip update. DeBuildLevel now supports uncompressed lvz images. For those that make programs for lvz's, if the uncompressed size and compressed size are equal, then you can skip the uncompression. Also when compressing, if the compressed size larger than uncompressed data, you can set the uncompressed data in there, and have the two size values set to each other. You cannot do that with the CLV2 section yet though, which is a bug in continuum where it doesn't check if already uncompressed. |
|
| Buildlevel is updated again (still inside lvztoolkit.zip) to fix the small object information file. So if you build a lvz, and it won't decompress in DeBuildLevel, redownload the toolkit and get the updated Buildlevel.exe |
|
| Buildlevel had a problem that it used whichever data (compressed vs decompressed) took less space, but Continuum didn't support this.lvztoolkit.zip - 216k - With buildlevel for 0.38, version 2 |

| Who's site is this again? | - [Gravitron] | April 22, 2003 | |
Ahm, yeah. Sorry for stepping a little tiny tad bit out of the proffesionality for today but just for clarification: In the latest SubSpaceHQ news post, Mackie(the clutz)man has decided to name this site "Shanky's Server Site". Now to those of you who don't know, Shanky is MGB's big (I think) brother. Now, although the gracious great Shanky is hosting this site, this is Mine Go Boom's Server Help (incase you do not know it yet) site. It's not Shanky's site (which can be found right around the corner), nor is it a server site, it is a Server Help site. With a stress on the help part (we help with more than just server issues, but this is what the place started from). So the next time you jump by SSHQ forums, or see silly ol' clutz, remind him whose site this is (and to stay away from virtual directory configs). Not that we do not appriciate the advertising "plug" though, so thanks. ^_^ Anyway, happy easter, passover, earthday or whatever. Party & Enjoy!

| The LVZ file format is updated for Continuum .38 (well, prerelease 3), so I've updated the LVZ toolkit file. It no longer contains my MakeLevel program, since .38 will read each lvz as its own. DeBuildLevel was updated to support this new version 2 of LVZ files. Check the Server Help Misc User Apps forum for future user made LVZ clients that support LVZv2. lvztoolkit.zip - 138k |

So people can finally stop bugging me/priitk/ghost ship/etc:Password recovery by e-mail feature has been added to SSC database server. Feature will be rolled out in 2 phases:1. Setting e-mail address phase, starting from January 29 During this time users are able to set their e-mail address by issuing command ?setemail email@add.ress. Users who haven't set e-mail address using that command will notification message to set it when they log in. This phase will last 2-4 weeks. NOTE: New accounts that are created don't get that question, as e-mail address is also asked by Continuum when new user is created. If, and if yes, under what circumstances ?setemail will be available after end of this phase is not decided yet. 2. Normal operation When user loses password for some name, he can log in using different name and ussue command ?lostpassword playername which causes new randomly-generated temporary password to be sent to e-mail address associated with the user name. Regular (original) password for that user will still work, new password is additional password, player use to log in and change regular password. Temporary password is valid for 24h. PriitK |

| Grelminar released a beta test version of ASSS for Linux only. Feel free to play around with it, includes everything needed to run it on standard Linux distros.asss-20030108.tar.gz - 1.55 meg |

This was a known problem for IE for a while, but the fact that someone who plays SS does this just shows how much some of our population is gay (also, Mozilla owns):A player has been stealing user passwords using MSIE security holes. As far as I've gathered currently he was going around in several zones, telling people to check web site http://bcproductions.hypermart.net. Everybody who visited that site with MSIE, got their c:\program files\continuum\profile.dat file silently uploaded to that site.I [PriitK] fell into that too, but as I don't keep any sysop, bang, billing passwords in profile, no damage was done. Sigh, it is really time to raplace MSIE with something more secure :( More info about unpatched IE security holes: http://www.pivx.com/larholm/unpatched/ |

| I have changed the forums for the first time in over 4 or 5 years now. The WebBBS's archives were too fat that it couldn't even support itself (why the link went bad, had to disable it). So now I have it pointing to a new PHPBBs forums (forums.minegoboom.com). More information about it all once you go over there and read the announcements and such. Note about old board: I plan on having it viewable for another month (the time I have it set to going into archive mode for the last years), but you cannot post anything. The main page will redirect you over to the new forums if you don't click on a link in 20 seconds, enough time for those who don't know where to click to go to new site, and enough time for someone to check back on an old message. After a month, the cgi itself will be replaced with a redirecting script to the new forums, since I know a bunch of websites like to link directly to the cgi itself. |

| For lack of better things to post news about, I'll post a quick update about the newest thing for the linux server. No, its not done yet. No, it doesn't have everything yet. No, you can't help (yet). Yes, it works under linux and windows (i might port it to wince/pocketpc one it is stable and the code doesn't change much). Yes, you can add your own *(yournamehere) command if you know how to program in C. No, platinum-halo still deals with getting your name back on the SSC billing server, so you can't have the name GOD. Yes, ?lag was finally added to the server. No, don't ask anymore questions because this method of reporting to unasked questions seems pretty lame to me now that I'm finished, but too lazy to go back and make it a better format. |

Asss (linux server) is slowly being worked on now, since college has sucked out the brain power of those working with it so they could remember that -ate endings means you have to memorize more crap to get the correct ion values and is crap when you can't even spell the damn atom names correctly anyways. |
| Some things have happened | - [MnM{333}] | August 21, 2002 | |
| Well a few things have happened. I'm not at liberty to post yet... so let's just leave it at that for now. ;) |
|
| Nothing new happened really to servers in the last month publicly, so just filling up space so I will have something in the news shown. |
| MERVBot build 23 released | - [catid] | July 23, 2002 | |
| The bot core has been updated to allow programmers to design nearly any behaviour for an arena. If you know C++, you can make a bot with the new plugin system. A tutorial is available on the download site as well as many existing bot plugins. There are a handful of devoted, talented, and friendly MERVBot developers who write plugins for others. Along with build 23 are assurances that previous complaints and crashes have been alleviated or at least explained in the F.A.Q. + Multiple plugins can be loaded on a single bot. + Glitches, which had plagued the earlier builds, are now gone. + There is a large selection of plugins; I am actively making new ones based on demand. + Entirely open-sourced. You may request plugin source code by e-mail Visit http://venus.spaceports.com/~catid/ |

This is out of SS context really, but damn, I bursted blood outta my nose. If you've seen The Matrix (and mayhaps didn't liked it that much too), check it out! |
| SSX now has a new website! | - [Gravitron] | July 4, 2002 | |
| Seems people are neglegant in posting news, as ussual...and it's upto me. SSX now has a website, you can reach it in here. It is only just started to build up, so don't expect much and there are broken links. Hopefully with time, it shall grow. Though I doubt xalimar will be the one to constantly update it (he's a very bussy man), so if you think you can contribute, you might wish to apply to staff, though I suggest you gather a few recommandations first, xali won't rush to hire people on the fly like most zones are getting their staff (full of dum newbs&petty kids, HAR!). |
|
| Ahh, it feels good to go to florida twice in one month. It feels better when I come home and get back on cable :) |
|
| This is my (Dzy Labram) new program for shipsets. It is still in its beta phase, so if you see any bugs or you have any comments, please e-mail me about it. This program is not meant for editing ships, but rather for rotating one you make with an image editor, so you only have to create one image per ship instead of 40. My e-mail: brillin_best@hotmail.com, the link for the beta version: continuum.netfirms.com/SSm.zip |
|
Seems several birthdays went unnoticed, so, I thought I'll bright it up. So according to my ICQ, these guys (which if you don't know them, you are a newb :P) had their birthdays latly. GhostShip: 06/18 - Happy birthday ol' SS guru! KOSH: 06/18 - Happy birthday to you as well and thanks to bringing some color and paint to the SS world! JMCDaveL: 06/26 - Happy birthday SS retiree with fame, red dwarf rulez man!Hope you all had a nice creamy cake and a day off to relax. May there be many more to come. |
|
| Going to florida, again :) Leaving June 22nd till July 1st. I might have internet access through either NetZero, AOL, or another free provider down there. Anyways, I have a project to work on offline, so shouldn't matter much. I get to meet Platinum-Halo on the way down, and stay at his house too, so that will be neat. |
|
| A good example of all the things you can do in subspace with lvz's is in the zone SSCX A Small Warzone. The main arena has my flag stats bot with a .lvz showing game time left when a team has 5 flags, and every so often divine's bot showing your stats in game. Then there are the board game bots. Currently, ?go chess and ?go reversi (also known as Othello) are completely done and have all game rules in it. Divine working on a scrabble bot now as I type this up. |
|
| ASSS No, it isn't a mistype of the work ass (sorry Shanky), but something else; A Small Subspace Server. I've been getting plenty of emails in the last while about people wanting to make their own servers, but not having enough knowledge or the required skills for it that I'll post a little update. Please don't send me emails with requests or wanting to help. Asss is a new server that was created by someone in SubSpace. I won't say his name right now, otherwise he would get a flood of messages/emails like I know I will. :( It was started a while back as a linux server, but I helped with it so it compiles for both linux and windows. It does not support any client except VIE as of yet, though it will support continuum in the future, hopefully. We do have a server-side bot system thought up, and a chat-only public protocol in the works. No, we will not make a *(your name here) command for you that lets you kill everyone instantly, you can make a server-side bot later that can do that for you. The only thing I would need of public help would be just this. I need a copy of the .lib, the .dll, and any required .h's for making a program to use Berkeley's DB library, version 1.85. I know of a copy at Nightmare.com, but have yet to have any luck, or others, with compiling it. If you can get a copy of this compiled into a .lib, a .dll, and any required .h's to be able to use it, send it along to me at mgb@minegoboom.com. |
|
| I will be in florida from Wednesday, My 29, 2002 through Monday, June 3, 2002 for a senior class trip. I will bring my computer and a NetZero account thingy, so I may have internet access, but it is unlikely I'd be doing much more than checkups. Yes, I will have fun, and happy birthday to someone :) |
| Happy BirthDay to ME!!! | - [Gravitron] | May 25, 2002 | |
Yerp, it's that time of the year again. My birthday! I'm now 20 years old, my life stinks, shrug. Where's my damned presents!? =P |
| SubSpace is 1337 @ MPOGD.com | - [Gravitron] | May 19, 2002 | |
SS had just cut through the 1000th vote and keep on going, wooohoo. By the way, MGB it seems I'm also the oldest member on the staff...bahah. :p In other news, unless my ICQ got trambeled by a herd of sheep, it informs me that our staff member JSB's birthday is coming, so happy birthday mate! |
|
| What is with all my staff being in another country? Bah.. Anyways, added Gravitron to the staff page, which for those of you who never saw it before, is linked on the bottom of every server help page in the footer. Tells info about staff members a bit, with their ages (if I updated it on time for their birthdays). Anyways.. I'm the only one in the good ol' U. S. of A. |
|
| If you havn't looked at MPOGD lately, you might want to now. At the time of this post, Continuum (SubSpace) is #1, more than double of what second place is. This is good free advertisement for us. So how can you help? On their website, click the VOTE button, look for Continuum (SubSpace) on the next page, and hit submit. Ever vote counts, so feel free to vote for us. |
|
| For those of you who visit the site frequently, you may have noticed that Continuum is now ranked 10th in the Multi-Player Online Gaming Directory (MPOGD for short). If you haven't voted yet go to http://www.mpogd.com/ and click on vote. Scroll down and find Continuum(Subspace). This is a great oppurtunity for the SS community as a whole to help grow an evern larger player database, and potentially make SS once of the most widely played games. After all, what game is better than Subspace? None, so go vote now ;) |
|
Through the council emails, Priitk has stated this responce to Zippydan's latest ideas:Sorry, I have been rather busy with work and done only needed maintenance tasks for the Subspace during last months and this situatation is likely to continue at least for a month. My comments about the suggestions: 1. 45 degree wall angles -- easily doable. I'll probably make it more general in the way that instead of current fixed tile number system where tile properties are fixed with tile number (ie tile #171 is safe zone, #172 is goal, #176-191 are fly under, etc) level will have additional piece of information called "tile properties" where you can define all kinds of parameters for all the tiles (0-255). Properties for a tile would include: * special tile functions: safe zone, goal, door, etc * tile type solid or passable * layer for that tile, fly over, fly under, etc * color it is shown on radar * extra stuff like tiles that doesn't allow antiwarp, tiles that doesn't allow mines, etc * tile angle * etc 2. Support for 16 or whatever bit graphics is easy too but there are several problem with that: * main problem: lack of graphics artists contributing to Subspace. I mean we have searched for people to re-do Continuum graphics, but haven't found nobody, at least nobody good. And beeing good when doing graphics is more important than number of colors. * download size for lvl and lvz-s will go up. there is already some whining about it 3. Also easy from programming perspective, only problem for users finding free key combinations for it :) Suggestion #3 was for strafing, ie: going left/right without turning 4. It makes sense only if you are viewing game board at the angle just like in Infantry. And what is the point to clone Infantry, go play it at Sony online if you like it :) Suggestion was to have vertical bouncing bombs, such as with some of infantry's weapons PriitK
So, for you future map makers/graphical artists, come help us :) We need a nice map editor to support abilities to change tile types around (i believe someone is making a new map editor also, called Continuum Level Editor), and we need new, pretty 16bit color graphics. Mmm.. more shades of gray.. |
| Infantry / Cosmic Rift going Pay | - [Mine GO BOOM] | April 27, 2002 | |
| As some of you may know, Infantry and Cosmic Rift are going pay on May 1st, 2002. This will mean they will lose a few players due to people being cheap (as most of us seem to be, since we are playing a free game), so this may mean more people coming and trying subspace/continuum since they are similar games. Which could mean more players that know sort of what they are doing. So, try and get your cosmic rift/infantry friends to play continuum, since we are free, and they are not. :) |
|
| Just a little useless update.. after years in the waiting, the cable company finally setup their network for cable modems. Guess who got it about 2 hours after they sent the letters to people about it being ready? :) Woot! I don't lag anymore... |
|
| As of now (upto version .38pr1), continuum will not handle any object toggling packets (*objset) with more than 1 object. Also, the client will not handle the bot object packets that have been stated in the new subgame. This is NOT a server-side problem, but a client side problem. So until a new continuum is made to handle these packets, *objset is useless as is the bot object packets. |
| Subgame 12a and New Directory Server | - [Mine GO BOOM] | March 17, 2002 | |
Subgame12a has been released, and also a new directory server software. The DirServer's update is it works better with modem users. As for subgame12a, bunch of new things:
Added proxy detection to /*einfo. Proxy is detected for Continuum 0.37 and later clients. You need to set server IP address in server.ini [Misc] ServerIP for it to work. * Undetermined - SS 1.3x or Continuum 0.36 clients * SOCKS5 proxy - User is using Continuum's built in SOCKS5 proxy * Using proxy at localhost - player is using proxy ran in same machine as Continuum client. There is no other reason to do so than monitoring or tampering with packet stream * Using custom proxy - player is using custom proxy. Suspect cheating. * Using NAT - player is using router or firewall doing NAT translation * Not using proxy - no proxy was detected between client and serverFixed timer desync and slow FPS sysop messages. Before "Unknown interity violation" was displayed New cfg variable: Misc:StartInSpec - if set, players entering arena are always put to spectator mode New server.ini variable: Misc:ForceContinuumOnly - if set server will ignore ContinuumOnly variable is all cfg files and require Continuum in all arenas New command: *objset +/-(object id),+/-(object id0,... - sets state of listed map/screen objects. +(object id) shows object and -(object id) hides it. For example "*objset +1,-20,+13" shows objects 1 and 13 and hides object 20. Command is meant to replace *objon and *objoff commands and it can be sent to player privately or to whole arena. Command is meant for humans to use, for bots there is special packet for toggling objects states which is much more efficient. See BuildLevel documentation for more info about the objects. |
| Lvztoolkit's makelevel.exe (my lvz building program) has been updated. A problem with the name buffer on long IMAGE lines has poped up, and is now fixed.Lvztoolkit.zip |
|
| Tommorrow, you should notice that continuum .38 prerelease version will be made public. Since most people that read this webpage and these news posts are those that run servers, I will post something that relates to it here. All prereleases have NO security checks in them. This means that you cannot use any prereleases as a subgame continuum loader. In other words, the only zone you can connect to without having names in VIP or being a Smod/Sysop is the SSCU Continuum testing zone. |
|
| The LVZToolKit.zip's DeBuildLevel program was fixed for older 9x users. If the file you tried to double-click or drag-and-drop was in a long named folder, the OS sent ~ to the exe, which made it unabled to run it. The MakeLevel program in there does not have this fix for it, since it is just a crappy tester I made, and I'm hoping soon for someone to email me a very nice LVZ compiler/decompiler or both in one. GUIs not required, but they look oh-so-pretty. Thanks to the Smod in 17th Parallel for finding this bug in the program. Best of luck to the programmers out there hopefully working on a nicer .lvz maker. |
| Continuum .37 Zone Upgrader | - [Mine GO BOOM] | February 14, 2002 | |
| The easiest way to upgrade your zone to .37 is to download the following file, and extract both of them to your Version1 folder. In the .zip are 3 files: subspace.exe (continuum .37), update.exe (.36 -> .37 upgrader program link), and a .txt file explaining how to upgrade zone to .37.contupgrade.zip - 279k |
| Subgame 12 - Continuum .37 later this week | - [Mine GO BOOM] | February 11, 2002 | |
Subgame 12 has been released. A few server fixes, plus readys itself for continuum .37's extra .lvz stuff.Server.zip - Full server download Subgame12.zip - Upgrade to 1.34.12 subgame from a previous version. LvzToolKit.zip - Collection of .lvz programs and documents about them. Also includes the Lvz File Format.Read the Changes document inside either .zip file for changes. |
| SFSS Warzone Turf | - [jsb] | January 23, 2002 | |
Here is a description of my zone, SFSS Warzone Turf: When you play SFSS Warzone Turf, you must use all your skills of teamwork, base flagging and warzone dogfighting. If you do not wish to take part in the flag game provided and just like to kill people, thats fine, but take note that you will not recieve any points for killing. You will however get a good rec and be considered an expert warzone player. If you prefer to take part in the flag game, thats fine too. This is the only way to get points in Warzone Turf. There is one "pick-up" flag which you then take to one of the many bases, and you and your team-mates must defend this flag for 1 point every 2 minutes. There is the opportunity for you and your friends to create your own freq so the warzone fighters dont benefit from your teams hard work :) NOTE: This is not a newbie "super" zone! Its on all (or most of) the current Directory servers so you have no excuse! check it out

| Server Help IRC Channel | - [Snark] | January 6, 2002 | |
| We now have an IRC Channel where you can get Help with Server related stuff. The Channel is "#ShankyHelp" on Dalnet, a list of Dalnet Servers and a Chat Applet can be found at www.dal.net If you do not have an IRC Client yet you could download mIRC at www.mirc.com or just use the Chat Applet on the Dalnet Website. |
| Example.ini - Original Documentation for .lvz making | - [Mine GO BOOM] | January 3, 2002 | |
| Example.ini - 3.3k The above file is the original example ini file created by priitk for the beta testers to learn from. This file can give you a hint at what .lvz's can do with the next version of continuum. |
|
| I'm sorry to say that .lvz's (continuum .37's newest feature which allows screen/map objects and forced .bm2 and .wa2 downloads) is still not public. I am glad to say though, that .37 is coming along very nicely, and the new features will greatly change the future of zone making for the better.. Still no release date, since when one problem is fixed, 2 more come up, but it seems as if .37 is getting pretty close to being finished.. |
|
| Well, we finally hit 100,000 visits at Server Help site, so now the free counter from TheCounter.com (which I don't know why I use still, maybe I'm too damn lazy) will now only show in the image the thousands. So it will keep showing things like 100k, 101k, etc. |
| Subgame 12 - Prerelease 4 Preview | - [Mine GO BOOM] | November 25, 2001 | |
The private testing subgame version 12 is upto a prerelease version of 4 now. Just to give you a few updates on what it fixes:VIP password now lets players bypass security checks like vip.txt does. So in a continuum only zone, can give the VIP password to a user, and they can use VIE client. LevelFiles can now be optional, if they are in the .cfg as a + before file name. Continuum client has an option to bypass optional files, so now zones like StarWars can have an optional ship pictures, but certain bong files are forced. Helps with people with low bandwidth connections. CFG Varible, Misc:MinUsage. Allows certain arenas/zones to only be playable to 'vets', with min usage. Great for some subarenas where you are having dueling leagues (ie: TW's events) where you do not want random newbies, or people to create new random names, to play in. Team Sounds. Bong150.wa2 - Bong255.wa2 are allowed to be played via anyone for team messages. This is allowed so you can have an optional sound settings for your zone to play sounds like a #150 be "BASE IS RED" or something such as this. Mod *watchdamage command - Allows moderators to see your 'damage' you take from other users. Will display how much damage you took, for what weapon, shot by who, and how much energy you had before the damage. |
| Server Help Questions Back Online | - [Mine GO BOOM] | November 13, 2001 | |
| The Server Help's Questions via Email is back online. With this new server host, it includes a very nice webmail program, so now all the server help staff can check one email address (serverhelp@shanky.com) and reply to your questions. |
| Continuum .37 + Subgame12 soon | - [Mine GO BOOM] | November 6, 2001 | |
Well, .37 and subgame12 (both pre-releases) have been sent to the subspace council. I'll give you guys a head-start on whats going to be new (and LOTS will be server-side):New Level Building Program (BuildLevel). Allows you to send to client your own customized sounds, images, and lots of other neat junk, including an all-new "object" special. This allows mods+ on the server to turn on certain "objects" for any certain players, or all. Can also be turned off. Allows for lots of neat stuff.. Print Screen SHOULD work for everyone now. Client Proxy Support Load ship images from ship1.bm2 to ship8.bm2. If any of those files not found, will load from ships.bm2 for those ships. This allows ships to be different sizes, and for this next reason. [ship]:Radius. Normal subspace has ships radius (distance from center of ship that is 'hitable' by things) as 14. In continuum .37, now you can customize it. So you want ships to fit through 1 tile things? Want your fat capital ship to only fit through 4 tile wide things? Now you can, and with server-side ship images, you can make them LOOK their size too. Server to Client clock sync better. New command to view it, /*tinfo. Used to help detect cheaters using proxys to delay packets. *objon [object id] - Used with the ID set for an object in BuildLevel to turn that object on for a certain player (sent privately) or for everyone (sent public). *oboff [object id] - Turns it off. Can be private or public. Misc:LevelFiles, a Server.ini varible. List .lvz (BuildLevel output files), split by commas, to be sent to client. These will be the ship images, help files, sounds, etc that you build into a .lvz file. Misc:AllowVIEClients. A server.ini varible. If set to 0, no VIE clients allowed into zone. If set to 1 (or not listed in .ini), VIEs can connect. New server file, vip.txt. List names in here like moderate.txt's and such, and these people can enter the zone with VIE client, even if AllowVIEClients is 0, or the arena's cfg setting to block continuum uses is on. In other words, good for allowing VIE protocol bots into a continuum-only zone. This file also allows newer continuum versions into the zone without needing smod/sysop passwords. If zone is not connected to a billing server, will not use the file (like the moderate.txt).Also, the Server Help staff will be working its hardest in the next few days/weeks to try and create as many documents and help files on how to use the new features in this BuildLevel program. |
|
| Good job, your ISP's DNS lookup was updated, and now you see the new server for shanky.com. Sorry to those that may have lost posted messages during the transfer over. |

Subgame 11h has been released. Click links below to download.Server.zip - 1,467k - Full Server Software Subgame11.zip - 183k - Upgrade Only |
|
Just posting some info about Subgame11h, which is finished, but not released yet.Fixed bug where could send private messages to people in other arenas without your name being seen *relkill # [Mod command] - If set to 1, you will get all kill message reliable, no matter what (great for bots). If set to 0, back to normal < 200, no reliable kills. /*bandwidth <#> [Sysop command] - Private message to send to players, will set their CutbackWatermark for just them. Will override the Latency:CutbackWatermark. The number to use in *bandwidth is how many data per second they would max at. |
|
| Wanna know why SSCX was down? Well, from a souce who found a source inside the SSCX building said that while Xalimar (SSCX Host) was away for a bit, the machine running all those laggy zones was beeping, so the network operator shut the computer down. After a while, it was turned back on, but no programs were ran, until I assume, Xalimar popped them back up. Moral of this story: Yank out those crappy built-in speakers if your hosting stuff in a building like that. :) |
| Updated How To: Make a Zone | - [Mine GO BOOM] | October 10, 2001 | |
| I figured 4 or so years for a rusty old text on How To: Make a Zone lasted long enough. A new version has been update, in both HTML and TXT format. | BanG Mini Update (And new billing command) | - [Mine GO BOOM] | September 27, 2001 | |
| BanG has had a mini update added to it. Each zone now gets to have a 1000 userinfo saved for it, so you can ban names that are not online, but were one of 1000 last people to log into that zone. Now, so if a cheater jumps right before you hit enter on that ?ban NAME, it will still ban him with his last login info as if he was there. Also, ?message and ?messages have been finnally officially released. For info on how to use it, look in the commands page under the list of ? commands, it is the last two in the list, right above the sysop commands. |

| Continuum F1 Help Screen - Updated | - [Mine GO BOOM] | September 4, 2001 | |
| Upon suggestion from PLATINUM-HALO, Sysop of SSCX SCF West and T3 Apocalyptic Warfare (SSCC), Server Help now has a downloadable update for continuum's F1 help screen. Once saved to your continuum folder, this file will append all * and BanG commands to your F1 menu in game. So now you can look up a rare * command, or figure out which prize number is for a certain item, or just refresh your BanG command switch usage in game without having to go look up a website or find a printed page.commands.hlp - 14k - Save to continuum folder |

Another subgame release has been done. This has 2 new things added to it. One is a security patch for invalid banners that can be used to get data from the zone it shouldn't get (ie: passwords), and the other is a CFG setting, Misc:ContinuumOnly. For more info on the setting, go to the FAQ for it.Server.zip - 1,466k - Full server software Subgame11.zip - 182k - Upgrade patch to 1.34.11f |

I've been following this client in development for a while. Snrrrub is building an SS client that is going to run under Linux. So for all you SS addicts that have been holding on to windows just to play SS you can plan on switching OS sometime soon. It's presently still in it's alpha stages, since Snrrrub hasen't finished his development of the client yet. It's current version: 0.3. He's working on 0.4 now, since the lib he was using wasen't satisfactory in some way. Here is a useful link, http://snrrrub.2y.net I will post more on this later. -MnM

| Subgame version 1.34.11e has been released. Mostly a few crash bugs fixed. Yes, both c and d we not released publicly, as they were tested for SSC zones only, but 11e is being released publicly. The only non-crash bugs really fixed is the public-freq evener. Now when there are teams 0, 1, and 400, where freq 0 has 7 people and 1 has 2 people, people will enter ships to freq 1, not 0 anymore.Server | |
